Brain Tumours

Brain tumors are abnormal growths of cells in the brain or surrounding tissues. They can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous), and their impact on health can vary widely based on the tumor's type, size, and location. Symptoms often include headaches, seizures, vision or speech difficulties, and changes in behavior or cognitive abilities. Treatment options may involve surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, depending on the tumor's characteristics and its accessibility for surgical removal. Advances in research are leading to more targeted treatments, offering hope for improved outcomes.

Deen's battle was with a particularly aggressive type of brain tumor known as Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), associated with the H3 K27M mutation. This mutation makes the tumor resistant to many standard treatments, presenting significant challenges in managing the disease. To learn more about DIPG, visit DIPG and the H3 K27M mutation.

Name
Description

Astrocytoma

A glioma derived from astrocytes, with varying grades and prognosis.

Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor

A rare and fast-growing tumor often found in the cerebellum or brainstem.

Central Neurocytoma

A rare intraventricular tumor that typically arises in young adults.

Choroid Plexus Papilloma

A benign tumor of the choroid plexus tissue.

Craniopharyngioma

A benign tumor found near the pituitary gland.

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG)

A highly aggressive and difficult to treat brain tumor found in the pons, a part of the brainstem.

Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG)

A type of cancer that forms in the glial tissue of the midline of the brain, often with a H3 K27M mutation.

Ependymoma

A tumor that arises from the ependymal cells lining the ventricles of the brain and the center of the spinal cord.

Ganglioglioma

A rare tumor composed of both neuronal and glial cells.

Glioblastoma

Tumors occurring in the brain's corpus callosum.

Gliomatosis Cerebri

A rare tumor with diffuse involvement of the brain.

Mature Teratoma

A tumor originating from residual embryonic cells in the pineal gland.

Medulloblastoma

A fast-growing, high-grade tumor located in the cerebellum, it is the most common malignant brain tumor in children.

Oligodendroglioma

A slow-growing tumor that originates from oligodendrocytes.

Optic Pathway Glioma

A slow-growing tumor that affects the optic nerves.

Papillary Tumor of the Pineal Region

A rare tumor that arises in the pineal gland, characterized by papillary structures.

Pilocytic Astrocytoma

A slow-growing tumor that arises from astrocytes, often found in the cerebellum, it is the most common brain tumor in children.

Pineal Cyst

Cysts that occur in the brain, often in the pineal gland.

Pineoblastoma

A rare and aggressive tumor of the pineal gland.

Rhabdoid Meningioma

Rare, aggressive form of meningioma with rhabdoid features.

Spinal Cord Glioma

Tumors that occur in the spinal cord.
